The Norris H. McDonald Library, was founded by the Rotary Club of Cat lsland, in 2009. It was officially opened on the 24th of April 2010, and placed under the auspices of the Bahamas Library Services, in the Ministry of Education. It is housed in an old teacher’s cottage, built in the 1960’s, in the settlement of Bennett’s Harbour, Cat Island. It is named after a former Educator, Mr. Norris H. McDonald, who was born in Bennett’s Harbour, and is still alive (2014).
The library has a computer lab with 10 computers and offers after school reading and reading competitions.
It is also partners with Urban Renewal Organization.
The last week in June and the first week in July every year we have a reading camp for 2 weeks for children ages
3 to 14 years.
This year 2015 the camp was held June 15th – 26th at the library in Bennets Harbour, Cat Island, led by Ms Rita Strachan Library Supervisor and her staff, Denise Paige and Claudella Campbell.
Twenty five children took part. Activities included storytelling, reading, art and craft and painting.
